Urban Fiction

In past year, I have read and heard a lot of opinions in regards to the African-American book industry. The main topic seems to have been the popularity of Urban-Street Fiction or "Hood" books. Some like it, some don't. Here's my take on it. As you've seen on my previous 2005 book list, I read a variety of books including urban fiction. I think that the urban fiction that I've read is wonderful. The books are entertaining and fast-paced.

Now there are some that have numerous errors in it, but there are some errors that I've found in other genres of books so sometimes that happens. As long as it doesn't distract me from reading the book then I'm fine. I think the problem that people are having with it is that a lot of teens are reading these books and they feel that this isn't "good reading" or they're not reading the "classics". Well, at least they're reading something (I know I'm going to get hate email for this one.) If a teen is reading urban fiction, they will read another book in another genre if you steer them to it.

What's good about the African-American book market today is the variety of books and genres to choose from. It wasn't like that 10yrs ago. Urban Fiction is just like hip-hop music, they said that wouldn't last but it's still here. If you don't like hip-hop, don't listen to it. If you don't like Urban Fiction, don't read it. I don't think it would be fair to hate on these authors and publishers for doing what every author is trying to do: sell books. Urban Fiction has always been there with Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim. Urban fiction is here to stay.

I just got around to reading this, but my thoughts exactly. What is the bug fuss anyway? As you said, if a person starts out reading one thing they will possibly move on to other genres. Some authors are gripping because their books aren't selling because of the urban books, so I'm guessing their readers must have turned in that direction as well or they aren't promoting and marketing their books like the urban publishers and authors.

Urban Fiction is HOT! It's REAL! It's "US" to the utmost! We ain't going nowhere! So you best believe and get wit it 'cause' authors such as Tu-Shonda L. Whitaker, Keisha Ervin, Danielle Santiago, Tracy Brown, Wahida Clark, Shannon Holmes, K'wame... ain't gonna stop! I, for one, don't want them to stop, and if you cop a read, you won't either!

Stop criticizing, and realize that in all things you will have some books that ain't worth reading, but there are some that will 'shine'like the brightest gemstone, so get your feet wet. Sit back, get you a glass of relaxation, turn the music down low and let the Urban Lit's Royalty take you to places you've never been before! B there or b square! Don't hate, Congratulate! Our brothas and sistahs are doing it for themselves! Kudo's my people! We are arriving as we always do: With a colorful BANG!

New Review : In the Face of the Sun : Denny S. Bryce

5 out of 5 books I fell in love with Denny S. Bryce’s writing with her first book, Wild Women and the Blues. I absolutely love historical fiction, so I was eager to read In the Face of the Sun. Ba-byyyy, it did not disappoint! In the Face of the Sun is a dual timeline novel, switching between Los Angeles (Daisy - 1928) and Chicago (Frankie - 1968). Daisy's had a hard life, and it shows, as her personality completely changes between the timelines. Back in 1928, she was a hardworking, honest person that cared about her family and friends. In 1968, she’s drinking, smoking, and doing the absolute most, a complete opposite of sweet innocent Daisy. Frankie’s life isn’t peaches and cream, she’s pregnant and escaping her abusive husband. Her and her aunt Daisy pick up and head for L.A., for the adventure of a lifetime. You’ve got to read this book, I couldn’t put it down. I loved that there are history lessons interwoven in the pages, you’re reading and also learning at the same time. De...
