NEW REVIEW: Sister Souljah - A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story

Sister Souljah
A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

Porsche Santiaga had spent the first eight years of her life looking up to her older sister Winter. But when her dad is sent to prison, Porsche is forced to grow up in the harsh juvenile justice system that Winter knew nothing about. Through this growing process, Porsche is determined to become a strong woman. Will Porsche be the queen that she is destined to be, or will she be just another statistic?

Sister Souljah finally gives us a true sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever with A Deeper Love Inside. In the prior book, Porsche blended into the background and you didn’t get her whole story. With this novel, Porsche is telling you everything in her own voice so that you see everything through her eyes. Sister Souljah does an excellent job of showing the harsh realities of Porsche growing up in the juvenile justice system. Readers will find that Porsche has a totally different mindset than her older sister at an early age. She was not only concerned about surviving but also to become a better and stronger person. It was refreshing to see the growth in Porsche from the beginning to the end of the book. This story also has some great secondary characters that help Porsche along her journey including a young man named Elisha. Midnight and Winter do make appearances in this novel but this story is not about them. Sister Souljah also connects this story with the end of The Coldest Winter Ever so readers will not feel cheated. By the end of the book, you get a sound and satisfying conclusion with all of your questions answered about Porsche. You actually see the mature young woman that she becomes. A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story is a thought provoking coming-of-age story that was definitely worth the wait.

Bad Boy

All Kate ever wanted was to be loved & to love. Growing up in a group home for girls, all that Kate ever had to do was fight for her light. She had to tell these girls who was boss somehow. That was until Kate was brought in by The Johnsons. The Johnsons loved Kate and Kate loved them back. While living with them, Kate left her old habits behind with the help of The Johnsons and her social worker, Tisha. Tisha helped Kate realize that she was going to survive any hardship no matter what because she is a survivor.

After a year of living with The Johnsons, Kate found herself back at a group home. She found herself putting up with crap from her roommates because she was the new girl. As much as Kate wanted to, she wasn't going to let these girls break her or make her . Kate's peace of mind came back to her after she met Percy, or at least she thought. Percy put Kate through misery, and all Kate wanted was to please him. Soon she realized it was her time to leave him, but leaving would not be easy.

I liked Bad Boy by Dream Jordan because it told a story that not every girl could relate to but could learn from.  Bad Boy was a very good book; There were no spelling mistakes & you could understand what was happening clearly.  I give "Bad Boy" a 5 star rating. :)

NEW REVIEW: Takerra Allen - There's Power in the V

Takerra Allen
There's Power In The V
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

There's Power in the V by Takerra Allen is the story of three stisters: Valerie, Vickie and Veronica. Valerie is the oldest of the three and even from an early age, she had her life mapped out. She was determined to get an education and make something of herself. Although Valerie had a crush on one of the dope boys from around the way, she was not about to go down that road with someone that in her mind had no future besides the streets. Valerie makes a good life for herself and marries well to a big time lawyer, but the thing that Valerie is missing most from her marriage is the love and intimacy that she longs for. She soon realizes that having money and stability is nothing without love and happiness.

Vickie is the middle of the Bell sisters and from an early age, she staked claims on an older dope boy who all the girls seemed to want. Vickie eventually tamed him down and the two got married and had three beautiful little girls. Vickie loves her family more than anything and it breaks her heart knowing that she cannot seem to figure out what is the cause of her youngest not talking. She wondered if it was something she did while she was pregnant or what. Vickie would do anything for her children and not being able to do anything to help her daughter is something that hurts her. When a secret that her husband has been keeping from her is revealed, a spiral of events occur and quickly begins to shatter their marriage.

Veronica a.k.a. Roni is the youngest of the Bell sisters, and although her family loves and accepts her as she is, they do not like the person that she is in love with. Not because it is another woman but because they all feel that Roni is being used. They know that Roni is the type of person who loves hard and will do anything for the one she loves. It bothers Roni's family so much because the woman she is involved with only seems to want to be bothered with Roni when she needs something and they can see the hurt that Roni goes through. All they want is for Roni to be happy.

There's Power in the V by Takerra Allen is by far THE BEST book that Ms. Allen has written to date. The story is chock full of so many different emotions to shock, anger, and even sadden you at times. When a book can make you feel so many emotions in reading it, you know the author has written on hell of a story. Each sister deals with true-to-life situations, and it shows the power within the family. In reading Ms. Allen's previous books, I can see a tremendous growth in her writing style. There's Power in the V is definitely one of the best books I have read this year! I highly recommend this novel!

NEW REVIEW: Michelle Stimpson - Falling Into Grace

Michelle Stimpson
Falling Into Grace
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

The Sweet Treats was a sweet hit in the late 90’s, and consisted of Camille, Alexis, Tonya and Kyra. They were managed by Camille’s business-minded brother, Courtney. Greed smothered Camille, which ended the group and severed her relationship with Courtney. Broke and desperate for a comeback into the industry, Camille lies and makes enemy number one while trying to secure a contract with agent John David. The first lie is the beginning of many to almost everyone in her life.
John David agrees to see her only after hearing her demo. He agrees to sign her to a contract but with stipulations. First he tells her she can sing but he agrees only to her coming back not as a Rhythm and Blues singer but as a gospel voice. And he will not promote her until she joins a mega church to become that gospel singer. Camille joins Grace Chapel and she has her eyes on the praise team. They consist of seven members with strong vocals and a fine minister of music. Desperation can bring out desperate planning, but I’ve been told that “people plan and God laughs.”
It was interesting reading Camille’s story.  She is not so unlike me or even you, watching her move closer and closer to her red sea until she is at the edge, stripped and emptied out. She finally has no choice but to kneel and call His name to part the sea. The theme is one we can all benefit from in our walk. Talent and gifts come from God, and we should use them to glorify Him. Every lie you tell will need five more to cover up the first one.
It wasn't until Camille touched spiritual reality that she finally GOT it. She had an outward experience with the Holy Spirit, but eventually she turned it around and had an inward relationship and was able to touch spiritual reality in her everyday activities. Be like Camille and have a passion for your gift in the way God ordained you to walk in it.
Falling from Grace was a fantastic spiritual journey exploding with characters in and out of church. Adults and young adults would enjoy this read and find themselves gleaning quite a bit from the characters situations.  Falling from Grace was absolutely a HIGH 5 in my opinion. Ms. Stimpson has won her very own spot on my shelf.

After dealing with Charlotte's multiple affairs, Reverend Curtis Black is fed up and thinks it's time to divorce his wife. Even though he has had his share of dirt that the family and his congregation has had to deal with, he finds it hard to forgive his wife for her transgressions. But Charlotte has other plans. She knows that begging and pleading with Curtis not to give up on their marriage is not working. She will try anything necessary to make Curtis give up the decision to divorce her, even using his little girl and her stepdaughter, Curtina. To make things worse, Curtis has been talking about his marital troubles to another female by the name of Sharon Green. Will Curtis fall back into old temptation, or will he give his marriage another try?

Author Kimberla Lawson Roby has written another fabulous installment of the Curtis Black series. This book has drama, laughter, surprises, and forgiveness. This is definitely a page turner and when you pick up the book, you will not want to put it down until you have completely finished it. The one thing I love about this book is that you can pick up this book and read and understand the storyline. Ms. Roby does give a brief description of what happened with Rev. Curtis Black and his family. I have enjoyed each and every book in the Curtis Black series. I can only hope there are more to come.

Kiki Swinson and Noire
Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless

5 out of 5 books

I didn't know what to expect when I started to read this novel.  I knew with both of my favorite authors featured, this book wouldn't disappoint. This novel is two short stories written by each author. From the start to the end, you will see that money doesn't always bring you happiness and love, and at times, it can cause more problems.

Shamelessly Rich
Megan Rich was daddy's little girl. She had everything at her disposal....cars, designer clothes, and money you can burn.  Once Megan looks at her father and talked in her baby voice, her dad could never say no to his baby girl. But Megan loved to live on the bad side. She liked bad boys, dabbling in drugs, and defying all of her parents' rules. Things take a drastic turn when Megan’s parents give her an ultimatum of either going to rehab or moving out.  What decision will Megan make? Will she get the help she needs, or will she make the streets her new family, ending in deadly consequences?

Puttin' Shame in the Game
Noble was an eligible bachelor in search of a wife. With three eligible women, Noble's time is winding down when a choice must be made. Slowly but surely, Noble learns that everything that glitters is not gold, and he finds out who has his back and who doesn't. Will Noble make the right choice, or will the woman he chooses for his wife reveal herself in the worst way?

Both stories were written very well and showed the many facets of how money can changed a person for the worst. Both short stories exposed drugs, sex, greed, compassion, as well as manipulation. Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless is not one to disappoint, and both authors’ stories will keep you wanting more.

NEW REVIEW: Delaney Diamond - A Hard Man To Love

Delaney Diamond
A Hard Man To Love

Eva Jacob wants nothing to to with Derrick Hoffman, even though she is having his baby. Four months ago, Eva ended things with Derrick because she had done the one thing that was not part of their agreement: she fell in love! Derrick Hoffman grew up privileged and is used to having what he wants...when he wants it. So after the death of his stepfather, he decides he wants the baby that Eva is carrying. Eva has no plans of giving up her child, which leaves her only one choice, and that is to go along with Derrick's plan of marriage. Derrick had it all planned. He would give Eva a comfortable life while getting to see his daughter everyday. He didn't plan on falling in love with Eva. He has never uttered those words to anyone, not even his mother. But when an unexpected event takes place, Derrick realizes what's most important in life.

A Hard Man to Love is an excellent read by Delaney Diamond. The character development is outstanding. Diamond brings the characters to life and has you feeling different emotions toward them as you're reading. One minute you will find yourself just as mad at Derrick as Eva is, and the next minute you will find yourself feeling sorry for him because you can feel the pain that he is in. She also does a fantastic job with plot development. The way she weaves the primary plot and several secondary plots seamlessly makes for a terrific story line. This is the 2nd book in her Hawthorne Family series. I have not read the first book, but A Hard Man to Love makes me want to go seek it out!

NEW REVIEW: Anthony Barrow & Tracey 'Big Tray Deee' Davis - Streetz Gon' Cry

Anthony Barrow & Tracey 'Big Tray Deee' Davis
Streetz Gon' Cry
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

Streetz Gon’ Cry introduces a crew of young men deemed Vernon Boys. Their mindsets are of warring over territory and drug sales with their rival gang, the King Crips. Boo is the hot-head of the crew who begins to voice his disapproval of actions sanctioned by the Big Homie, S-Mack, as they are being disrespected by their enemies. Carter, a.k.a. Dollaz, is home from the penitentiary and an air of apprehension surfaces in the crew’s realms as the tensions continue to flare with division and deceit. The pledge that once stood for allegiance is questioned, beginning at the head as the body peeps an unknown force infiltrating their kingdom.

Upon beginning Streetz Gon' Cry, I thought it would be filled with the typical wildin’ out, gang banger mentality. But upon delving deeper into the read, I was pleasantly surprised. Character development was excellent; I loved the intelligence depicted with the characters as well as the emotional depictions, which proved to be even more fascinating. The authors need to put just a bit more effort in the editing. Some scenes weren’t separated, causing re-reads to decipher who was actually speaking. Fortunately, Carter was a captivating character that stole the storyline with just his mere appearance. I highly recommend Streetz Gon' Cry.

Charisse has agreed to marry Kevin. What was she thinking? The wedding is only a week away and everything is about to "hit the fan." Kevin will find out he has a child from a one night stand, Charisse will come face to face with a father she thinks abandoned her, she will find out that her mother has been keeping a secret, and her "friend" is still harboring feelings for her that he feels the need to share while all of this going on. And if that isn't enough, Kevin's ex-partner is in love with him and is trying to come between Kevin and Charisse. With all this on the table, Charisse and Kevin have a lot to sort out in order to make it the altar in a week.

Got a Right to be Wrong is another phenomenal read by Brady. The character development is excellent. There are several secondary characters that are critical to the plot of the story, and Brady does a wonderful job developing them to strengthen the plot. Got a Right to be Wrong is also a page turner. There are no lagging moments from beginning to end. I would highly recommend this book!

NEW REVIEW: Lutishia Lovely - Taking Care of Business

Lutishia Lovely
Taking Care of Business
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

The Livingstons are back, and when they come back, all hell breaks loose. In this third installment of the Business Series, there is suspense, jealousy, and of course drama. Taste of Soul Restaurant on the West Coast called Taste of Soul Tapas Style (TOSTS), is a complete success and about to celebrate its one year anniversary when an unfortunate accident occurs at the restaurant. There are a series of characters that you'll read about in this novel, and you'll start to wonder did they do it? The Livingstons start to wonder if this was a simple accident, or did someone deliberately set out to sabotage the restaurant?

Bianca Livingston was climbing up the ladder in the family business. It was her business plan to run the restaurant on the West Coast that beat out the plan of her brother, Jefferson. She worked hard to get where she is, and she was not going to let anyone hinder her success. She had finally followed her heart and broke up with Cooper Riley and married to her true love, Xavier Marquis. She thought she had everything right where she wanted it. That was until the incident at the restaurant happened. Will Bianca be able to bounce back and get the restaurant up and running again? Or, will she fail at the attempt and disappoint her family?

Jefferson Livingston was the only one that did not seem too concerned about the misfortune at TOSTS. Actually, he did not even join his family in L.A. to support his sister in her time of need. Was he still upset that she beat him out of running the restaurant on the West Coast? Or could it be that he feel in love with the sister of the man that was stealing money from his family? And was she doing the exact same thing to him? Whatever it was, Jefferson was not in the mood to be anywhere near his family...just near the bottle of liquor that he woke up too.

In the third book of the Business Series, author Lutishia Lovely has written another exciting installment with Taking Care of Business. This book keeps your attention from beginning to end. The author gives you just enough drama in this book to not want to put it down until you've finished it. I've enjoyed Ms. Lovely's books because while reading them, you can see yourself in the novel...like you're living it as it happening. If you have not read the first two books (All Up In My Business and Mind Your Own Business), you need too. The author does give enough background in this book that you don't have to refer to the others. But just to get some more information and depth on the characters, I recommend them both. Besides, they're both just as good as this one.

NEW REVIEW: Victoria Christopher Murray - Destiny's Divas

Victoria Christopher Murray
Destiny's Divas
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

Raine, Liza, and Sierra are a new, up-and-coming gospel group called Destiny's Divas. Their singing and their testimonies are the rave across the country. In their songs, they tell their audience how great God is, but behind close doors, they sing a different tune.

Raine Omari claims she loves everyone and could not dislike a soul...well, except her mother-in-law. Raine, tries everything she can to compromise, but it just does not work. Raine decides on a different route. Will she succeed, or will it all just cause more problems in the long run?

Twenty-something Sierra Dixon preaches that she's celibate until she can find that one true love she can marry. Not sure what celibacy means to Sierra because each man she meets, she's hopping into bed with him, and thinking he's the one...and he most definitely is not.

Liza Washington tries to be a faithful wife to her husband. But with him being a pastor and committing all types of sin, will she be able to forgive him and work on their marriage, or will all of his scandal wreck their marriage and destroy the church?

Destiny's Divas is an awesome book by Victoria Christopher Murray. While reading this novel, you will learn about three women that look like they have it all together, but when they're not on the stage, the reality comes out. They each have their own struggle with God, and they try to find a way out of their situations. Some of the story line seems predictable, but as you keep reading, you will be surprised that all is not what it seems. I really enjoy reading all of Ms. Murray's books, and this one was no different.  Destiny's Divas is a must read.

Marie Charles was Charlotte's It Girl! Partying and disappointing her father was what she did best. However when her latest antic causes an accident that could have been fatal, her father decided that his pampered princess needed to be taught a lesson. So when Marie has to complete 500 hours of community service at My Sister's House, a homeless shelter for women, she thought her life was over. Devon Harris is a well renowned chef that volunteered at My Sister's House. His volunteer work was personal and he took it very seriously. So when he learns that Charlotte's very own party girl would be volunteering, he was not very happy about having to put up with a pampered diva who didn't want to work. To say that their initial meeting was rocky is an understatement.  It was more like a train wreck. However, it didn't take either of them long to realize that the initial judgment of the other was vastly incorrect. Devon and Marie both entered into unfamiliar territory but they both were willing to discover what the other had to offer. Hopefully friends, family, and the past would not keep them from discovering what the future has in store for them.

Recipe for Desire was a fun read by Cheris Hodges. The main characters were extremely well developed and likable. There were several secondary characters who were an important part to the overall story line, which was also very well developed. The story also flowed very well without lagging moments. Hodges does a wonderful job of writing stories that seem to be your basic romance on the surface; but once you get past the top layer, there is a positive message underneath all that passion. Great read!

NEW REVIEW: Marsha Randolph - The Truth About Vashtai

Marsha Randolph
The Truth About Vashtai
Available Now!
5 out of 5 books

Married for twenty years, Omar and Vashtai Terrace were the picture perfect couple. They had the money and the power. During their marriage, Vashtai was everything for Omar, the kids and their business. After promising that Vashtai could have a spa day with her girls on her 40th birthday, Omar calls Vashtai on the last night of their company celebration and demands she comes home. Vashtai tells Omar that she is not coming, turns off her phone and calls the front desk and adds a “do not disturb” notation to her room. This act of female defiance is considered a dangerous example, which bruised Omar’ego. Being led by his business associates, he retaliates by leaving her and marrying another.

He realizes too late that those same associates who were in his ear were the ones who had an ulterior motive of coveting over what was his. As much as things seem to change, they remain the same. The players and places change, but not much more than that. After Omar divorces Vashtai, she has a few close encounters with men who she would ultimately walk away from early enough so as not to cause too much collateral damage. She picks up in business without missing a beat, but it’s her personal life that is suffering.  Unfortunately, she doesn’t know it just yet. It's when she finds herself alone and in a quiet place that she realizes the truth about Vashtai. Minus the comforts and riches she’s use to, the Holy Spirit reveals the missing link, but she is not ready to embrace that truth. Once she is ready to find her queen-ness, she is ready to do a praise dance. No longer doing everything for others, but still ministering to those she is called to.

Randolph created fully developed characters and a very good plot focus. It was a pleasure to see Vashtai and Omar along with the supporting characters move from one place to another by the end of the story. The characters felt real to me as I watched them through their situations. But the best part was seeing where they would end up. How the author paralleled the bible story within this story really made the book come alive for this reader. But it also made me go back over the biblical story with a new eye. The Truth About Vashtai has definitely changed me and my interactions in my relationships.

At Last was an excellent read by Bianca Eugene. Eugene has a flare for writing. She draws you in from the very beginning and holds you hostage there to the very end of the story. The development of the primary and secondary characters was great. The secondary characters were essential to the setting of the main story and she did of awesome job of making the story flow seamlessly. Great read!

J. Leon Pridgen II
Color of Justice

James Pruitt had no questions about being adopted. His bond with his parents was tight, and he never felt the need to search for his biological mother and father. He realized early on how lucky he was to even have parents like William and Mamie Pruitt. However, on his death bed, James' father used his last breathe to tell James that he loved him but what came next set the tone for the entire book: “have…brother, help him.” The author didn't put much into this scene; you could almost pass right by it. James has much more on his mind at this time then to realize the magnitude of what his father has just said.

While going through his dad’s things, James finds a box filled with newspaper clipping, photos and several different articles, all about Warren Johnson...the same Warren Johnson that was in the newspaper on Friday, the same paper James never had a chance to read. After pondering about the box, James comes to one conclusion; his father has a love child.

Out of respect for his mother, he tries to hide the box but she asked for it. James tries to deter her by saying he already went through the box and “it’s nothing.” But his mother is standing waiting for James to turn the box over to her, and he does. Mom tells James that she knows about the box and who the young man in the paper is. She tells him it’s his half brother by his biological mother. Shocked, James asks “"you know who my mother is?" Very soon after this conversation, James is told some information that will be the catalyst for his actions throughout the next hundred pages or so.

Color of Justice is my second book that I've read by Pridgen. Hidden Secrets Hidden Lives was my first and both books proved to be very satisfying reads for this reader. His storytelling skills are direct and to the point. It doesn’t matter whether he is portraying a corporate or human issue, your heart will be engaged. This time my heart was lost in this story and as it came to a bitter sweet end, the emotions from James and his family and friends left me wondering how far would I go for family?

If I was a weather person I would tell you there’s a chance of rain take your umbrella with you today. As a reviewer I’m telling you to read this book because it is filled with the food needed that makes a good story.

Dominique is large-and-in-charge of her life and does not need a man to complicate things. So when she meets her son's new football coach, she can't understand the immediate attraction she has to him. Jake McDonald is an ex-NFL star who now coaches a middle school football team. He is trying to get his life back on track from the loss of his wife, his father, and the fact that the men in his family don't live past 60 due to heart disease that runs in his family. So when he comes in contact with this voluptuous, full-figured woman, he is totally thrown for a loop. She is not even his type. He usually goes for the petite, "willing to please" kind of woman, which is everything that Dominique is not. Dominique and Jake can't seem to get on the same page. When it seems as if they have finally decided to give their relationship a try, an unfortunate event causes Jake to pull back even though he is truly in love with Dominique. Hopefully that large-and-in-charge attitude of Dominique's can get back her man!

Love in Play was a great read by Zuri Day. Day did a wonderful job with character development since both Jake and Dominique were very relatable. They both remind you of some fun-loving, good-natured person you know or have known. The secondary characters are fun and help make the story more enjoyable. Day also does a fantastic job of keeping the story flowing without having moments of the story dragging out without anything eventful happening. I think Love In Play should be added to your TBR pile.

Five friends with different personalities and lifestyles are thicker than thieves. Damisha, Kori, Jamyya, Skye, and Jasmine each have a secret in one way, shape or form. But like the old saying goes, “What’s done in the dark will come to light.”

Skye has the perfect life looking from the outside. She has a career, a caring boyfriend and a wonderful child. But no one knows the hell that Skye is secretly living in. Omar is controlling, insecure and is constantly stalking her every move. Will these issues eventually tear at their tight relationship? Will Skye reach her breaking point and fall into the arms of another man?

Damisha has never been the settling down type. Her philosophy is to beat a man at his own game. Damisha slowly finds her life is spiraling out of control when she realizes she is falling in love with two men. Will Damisha choose the good guy, or will the bad guy win her heart?

Jasmine is finally getting her life together after a few unfortunate setbacks. Possibly becoming an entrepreneur and having a good man by her side, things are finally going right for a change. But things are not always as it seems and the person who is causing havoc and chaos is someone she never would expect to commit the ultimate betrayal.

I could hardly put this book down. Latisha N. Patterson did an excellent job of capturing each of the five main characters. 368 pages seemed like nothing because this was definitely a great read.  This is a great debut novel by this author, and I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for drama, friendship, pain, love, consequences. You will find all that and much more in Airing Out Dirty Laundry.

Lisette is back to help wives teach their husbands a lesson. But this time Lisette has other partners to help her out. All is going well until they get a request from a woman that Lisette is a little leery about, but she accepts the case anyway. The business gets dangerous as someone from Lisette's past is out for revenge and is determined to make Lisette pay with her life.

Eye for an Eye is the perfect sequel to Home Wrecker by Dwayne S. Joseph. Although her actions are quite dubious, Lisette is a character that you will root for until the very end. There is a lot of surprising twists in this story that will have you on the edge of your seat and yelling at the book. Joseph did an excellent job of providing a true conclusion to this story. Eye for an Eye is a fast paced page-turner by Dwayne S. Joseph.
